Peat is organic material that has built up in waterlogged conditions over thousands of years, and represents a large store of carbon captured from the atmosphere. Peatlands damaged by drainage can rapidly lose their stored carbon as carbon dioxide but re-wetting these peatlands could increase emissions of other greenhouse gases (methane and nitrous oxide).   This course, led by Moors for the Future, will cover:

• The importance of peat as an upland habitat and resource, peat formation, types of peatland and peat as a carbon sink
• Techniques for the management of peat moorland including drainage management
• Techniques for the restoration and rewetting of peat moorland
• Liming NPK application
• Seeding/spreading heather brash
• Conservation and biodiversity including clough woodland creation
• Grant availability through Countryside Stewardship
• A health and safety briefing prior to site visit
• Site visit to a local moorland
