Please note: This course is being held over three consecutive Wednesdays – 17, 24 and 31 July 2013 – 21 hours in total.

This course is supported by the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) for which Defra is the Managing Authority, part funded (or financed) by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development: Europe investing in rural areas.

COST

The cost of this course is £115.50+VAT (with RDPE funding) or £385+VAT without funding.  The funded rate is offered subject to confirmation of eligibility and the full completion of the RDPE Skills Framework Trainee Enrolment and Declaration and also the RDPE Skills Framework Trainee Feedback forms, copies of which are available from Erica at erica.spencer@ruraldevelopment.org.uk or by telephoning the office on 01765 609355.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Making the transition into a first management role involves the development and use of a different set of skills and can be daunting.  This introductory programme provides an insight into some of the skills that you will need to use and develop, and provide some practical tips which you can put into practice.

AIM

This introductory course aims to provide participants with an awareness of the skills and knowledge to build confidence as a manager.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain how to build an effective team
  • State the differences between leadership and management
  • Explain the communications process in the workplace

COURSE CONTENT

  • How teams develop and become effective – and the leader’s role in the process
  • Understanding team role and how to get the most from your team
  • Differences (and similarities) between leadership and management
  • Leadership styles and effect on team members
  • How communication works in organisations – including formal and informal processes
  • Verbal and non-verbal communications
  • How to use effective questions and active listening to gather information

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

All staff who have roles which involve managing staff.  It is particularly suitable for those who are new to this role, or who have no formal training for their role.

ASSESSMENT

There is no formal examination for this programme.  The programme is assessed through three practically based activities designed to enable participants to demonstrate understanding of the topics and their ability to apply the knowledge into relevant activity, making a difference in real workplace situations.

DURATION

21 hours (3 days of 7 hours’ training)

CERTIFICATE

Participants who successfully complete all parts of the programme will achieve the Award in Leadership and Management Skills awarded by the Institute of Leadership and Management.

COURSE METHODOLOGY

The course is led by trainers who have considerable experience of working in management roles in a variety of different organisations.

The course is highly interactive and participants will be encouraged to contribute with their own experiences and ideas.  Real life and practical examples of the techniques will be used to illustrate the points covered, and participants will have the opportunity to share and discuss different ideas.
